Game of Thrones - Roleplay Module is a mod for Mount & Blade: Warband, created by Blue Moon Productions. Info: Game of Thrones - Roleplay Module is a module is based on PW 4.4 and tries to convert the GoT universe into M&B Warband. Since Rich seems to be having fun with a Game of Thrones mod in Crusader Kings II, I thought I might try a GoT mod as well, but with a different game: Mount & Blade: Warband.Adding sea travel.
Will fans finally bring us the Game of Thrones video game we've been waiting for?
The other day I wrote that George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones deserved a better class of video game, more in tune with the spirit of the books. I suggested something along the lines of Paradox Interactive's upcoming War of the Roses, or their previous titles such as Mount & Blade.
Well, ask and you shall receive. It turns out a group of fans of both the Mount & Blade games and Song of Ice and Fire books are picking up the slack and creating a mod for Mount & Blade Warband that does just this very thing.

I think that this, and really the entire modding community, is living proof that games are much more a participatory medium than most other forms of entertainment.
Sure, fans write fan-fiction all the time for popular franchises like Star Wars, but there's something more impressive about a community of gamers banding together to create a gaming experience using tools that developers of popular games have made available.
Bethesda, Valve, Paradox Interactive, and a number of other developers leave the gates pretty wide-open for this sort of tinkering, and it's led to all sorts of incredible additions to PC games.
One of the biggest drawbacks of console gaming, in fact, is the lack of any sort of modding community. The difference between Skyrim on PC and Skyrim on Xbox 360 or PS3 isn't just a matter of more powerful gaming rigs available to PC gamers, it's also the diversity of mods available for many (though certainly not all) PC titles.
So Skyrim on PC can look and feel almost entirely different thanks to mods. New weapons packs, texture packs, lighting realism, and any number of other improvements (okay, not always improvements) make Skyrim on PC an entirely new creature.
So what does this say about games as art? With the question of a new or alternative ending still very much on many of our minds in light of the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy, many critics of the critics have posited that a game is a work of art and can't be changed due to fan pressure; that this sets a dangerous precedent and cheapens artistic integrity.
Does a mod of a game like Mount & Blade or Skyrim or Half-Life 2 threaten its artistic integrity as well? The art is being changed - and not just due to fan pressure, but by fans themselves. The modding community is taking a work of art and changing it, distorting it, and making it in some ways a new work. Their own work.
We live in an age of mash-ups and online sharing. Fan-made trailers, music videos, and video games are popular and very common. Art still exists. The vanilla Skyrim experience is still the pure work of its creators plus a few badly needed patches (Sidenote: what does the act of patching a game say about its artistic merits?) and the mods can exist entirely separately from the game itself.
I'd argue that the same is true of DLC. Your vanilla ME3 can retain its ending and story and everything else about it even if BioWare does release alt-endings via downloadable content.
And meanwhile, those of us who want to play a sandbox style Game of Thrones video game, replete with tournaments, duels, and archery contests, can thank the modding community for taking the art of video games one level higher.
